Understanding the NDIS

A simple, jargon-free explanation of how the NDIS works.

The Basics

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s national approach to funding the supports needed by people living with permanent and significant disability. It funds reasonable and necessary supports that help participants pursue their goals, increase independence, and build community connections.

Each NDIS participant has a personalised plan with funding grouped into three main categories: Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports, and Capital Supports. Each category serves a different purpose and includes different types of services.

Funding Categories

How NDIS funding is structured

C

Core Supports

Day-to-day supports that help with everyday activities — including assistance with daily living, social and community participation, transport, and consumables.

CB

Capacity Building

Supports that build skills and independence — like therapy, support coordination, life skills development, and employment supports.

CP

Capital Supports

Higher-cost items like assistive technology, home modifications, and specialist disability accommodation.

Plan Management

Three ways your plan can be managed

Self-managed

You manage the plan yourself — you handle invoices, choose providers, and track spending. Maximum flexibility, maximum responsibility.

Plan-managed

A registered plan manager handles the financial side, while you choose your providers (registered or unregistered).

NDIA-managed

The NDIA pays providers directly. You can only use NDIS-registered providers, and the process is straightforward.
