NDIS Eligibility

Who can access the NDIS, and how to apply.

Eligibility Basics

Who can access the NDIS?

To access the NDIS, a person generally needs to meet criteria around age, residency, and disability. The exact criteria are set by the NDIA, but in broad terms:

  • Be aged under 65 when you first apply
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa
  • Live with a permanent and significant disability that affects everyday life — or, for early intervention, have a disability or developmental delay where early supports will help

If you’re unsure whether you or someone you support is eligible, the team at Ngara Care can talk it through with you. We can also point you toward the official NDIS access process.

How To Apply

Steps to access the NDIS

1

Check eligibility

Use the NDIS eligibility checklist on the official NDIS website, or call them on 1800 800 110.

2

Make an Access Request

Submit an Access Request Form along with supporting evidence about your disability and how it affects daily life.

3

Gather evidence

Reports from doctors, allied health professionals, and specialists help demonstrate eligibility.

4

Planning meeting

If approved, you’ll have a planning meeting where your goals and supports are discussed.

5

Receive your plan

Your NDIS plan is finalised, listing the funded supports and the period it covers.

6

Start using supports

Choose your providers — like Ngara Care — and begin receiving the support you need.

Need Help?

Not sure where to start?

If the NDIS feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. Many of the families we work with begin with the same questions. We’re happy to have a relaxed conversation, point you toward the right resources, or help connect you with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Early Childhood Partner.
